MEET ANTHONY

FOUNDER, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, & PRESIDENT

What inspired you to start FirstGen Society?

My personal experience...I remember being a first-gen student and how alone I felt throughout the whole college process. From application to graduation I really did not have anyone to lean on or ask questions. I clearly remember thinking, “why does it seem like everyone else has it all together. What am I missing?”

Now after graduating and working in higher education for over 20 years, I’ve seen this time and time again. I feel like it's time to create a group of first generation college students and allies on a national scale where we can connect, empower, and grow together!

Are you a first generation college student?

Yes. I was the first in my family to not only earn a Bachelors degree, but also a Masters.

What advice would you give to incoming first generation college students in their first year of college?

Join FirstGen Society! Lol.

Make sure that you build a base of support and find your resources. Visit administrators, counselors, advisors, and ask all the questions you can. If you don’t know what to ask, then you could ask your professors or college administration what are some questions I should be asking. Be involved in your institution and be in the know.

What is your favorite quote?

“Life is like a mirror, what you put into it is what you get out of it…. So keep reflecting greatness!"

If your life was a book, what would it be titled and why?

"Lessons Learned" - I have had many adversities in my life, but I have had more blessings too. I have learned to take each life experience both good and bad and turn them into a teachable moment. I'd like to say that I have learned my lessons and want to share them with others.
