At the National Leadership Society of First Generation College Students, a.k.a. FirstGen Society, we respect your privacy. Your member experience is our highest priority, which includes protecting the privacy of our members, partners, and other contacts associated with FirstGen Society.
This privacy policy applies to all personal data that you give us. This document explains what we do with the personal information that you provide us. If you have not already done so, please read our User Agreement before reading this Privacy Policy.

Consent
Your use of our Membership Service signifies your consent to us collecting and using personal information about you in accordance with this Privacy Policy. Should we choose to change our Privacy Policy for any reason, the changes will be posted here, so that you are always kept informed of how we collect and use your personal information, and when we may disclose it.
How do we use your information?
This document explains what we do with the personal information that you give us. If you have not already done so, please read our User Agreement before reading this Privacy Policy. FirstGen Society uses the personal information that we collect to allow you to use the services offered by our website (Site) including Paid-For Content (the Membership Service). This Privacy Policy applies only to our Membership Service and not to any other company, individual, organization or website that you may reach via a link from our website, except for those companies we mention below. FirstGen Society may use your personal information for the following purposes:
- Processing your transactions. FirstGen Society uses personal information to process orders you make from our Site. We may use financial/credit card and payment information to process your order. For example, in order to process your account for the Membership Service and in order to reconcile our accounts, Protx or such other payment partner as we may use from time to time may provide us with information detailing the credits and/or debits made to your credit/debit card.
- Providing support or other services or responding to your requests or inquiries. FirstGen Society may use your personal information to provide you with support or other services that you have ordered or requested. We may contact you to let you know about your membership or relevant benefits, programs, and opportunities available to you, through your membership with FirstGen Society. Communications may include sending you newsletters and news on events that you may be interested in.
- We may also use your personal information from time to time to respond to your requests or inquiries. You can elect not to receive such marketing material at any time by writing to [email protected].
- Registration Information. Although certain areas of our website are made available to all visitors, before you can use the Membership Service, you will need to register your details with us in accordance with the registration details. If you have not already done so, please register your details. Should you not register your details, you will not be allowed to use the Membership Service. We reserve the right to ask for your date of birth to verify your age. Please note we will not collect the personal information of any individual who tells us he or she is under the age of 18. FirstGen Society may also use your personal information to respond directly to your requests for information, including registrations for newsletters, webinars, or other specific requests.
- Providing online forums and social networks. FirstGen Society will include its social media channels linked from our Site that permits you to participate in interactive discussions, social networking activities, post comments, or other content to an online social network exchange community. Some of these services are moderated; all may be accessed for academic, social, networking, or professional development purposes (for example, tips on how to apply for financial aid or suggestions on planning a social meet-up with your chapter or club). FirstGen Society does not control the content that users post to these forums or social networks. You should carefully consider whether you wish to submit personal information to these forums or social networks and tailor any content you submit appropriately and in accordance with the relevant terms of use. You should also review any additional terms and conditions that may govern your use of these services, including terms related to sharing your personal information and receiving communications.
- Managing merchandise. FirstGen Society may contact you if you purchase merchandise on our Site to confirm certain information about your order.
- Communicating with you about a meeting, conference, or event. We may communicate with you about a meeting, conference, or event hosted or co-sponsored by FirstGen Society or one of our business associates. This may include information about the event's content, event logistics, payment, updates, and additional information related to the event. Information you provide when registering for or participating in a conference managed or co-sponsored by parties, other than or in addition to FirstGen Society may be shared with those parties, and the treatment of such information is further subject to the privacy policies of those parties. FirstGen Society and its conference co-sponsors may contact you after the event about the event and related events. Please note that FirstGen Society conference, meeting or event organizers, co-sponsors, exhibitors, and other third parties may directly request your personal information at their conference booths or presentations. Providing your information to them is optional, and you should review their privacy policies to address your particular needs and concerns about how they will treat your personal information.
- Elevating you for a higher member grade or nominating you for a FirstGen Society award. FirstGen Society may use personal information such as your name, education, college or school, and chapter or club activities to consider you for a higher member grade or for a FirstGen Society award or recognition. FirstGen Society may need to share this information with your nominators, advisor, chapter or club leader, references, judges, and other parties involved in evaluating your eligibility.
- Maintaining the FirstGen Society Member Directory. If you are an active member of FirstGen Society, your information will be included in our Member Directory.
- Engaging with third parties. Apart from entities that are involved in helping us to run our Site and our partners that we have a contractual agreement with, we never give your information to any third parties or advertisers without your consent. FirstGen Society may share your personal data with third parties that we partner with and have a contractual agreement with in connection with services that these entities perform for or with FirstGen Society (for example, sponsors or co-sponsors of a FirstGen Society event). We may also share your information from time to time with third parties that we partner and have a contractual agreement with whom we think might provide content or discounted products or services to you as a benefit of your membership with FirstGen Society. These third parties are restricted from using this data in any way other than to provide services for FirstGen Society as our partner, in which they and FirstGen Society are contractually engaged. These third parties are carefully selected by FirstGen Society and obligated to keep your data secure. The entities that help us run our Site are SubHub, which provides hosting and design services to us, and Protx [or other payment provider], which provides credit card payment processing services to us. In order to buy material from our Site you will have to comply with the terms of our payment partner, Protx, and will need to review and agree to Protx Privacy Policy when you do so (see the Protx terms and conditions at protx.com for further information). We and Protx will share information with each other only to the extent necessary for the purposes of processing payments you make for materials from our Site and to enable us to retrieve payments from Protx. SubHub provides the technology on which our Site runs and holds and maintains the databases in which data about our users is contained. SubHub will only use data you provide to the extent necessary to enable us to operate the Site. We reserve the right to access and disclose individually identifiable information (i) to comply with applicable laws and government requests, (ii) to be able to operate our systems properly or (iii) to protect ourselves or our users.
- Getting feedback or input from you or assessing member interest. In order to deliver benefits or services of most interest to our members, from time to time, we may ask members to provide us input and feedback (for example through surveys, interest forms, or focus groups).
Cookies
Cookies are small files of information, which are stored on your computer. Websites you visit ask your computer to store this information and retrieve the information from your computer so that they can keep track of things like other web sites you visit or how you navigate our website (Site) or other files which provide you with the Site. FirstGen Society's website may link to other sites created and maintained by other public- and/or private-sector organizations. FirstGen Society provides these links solely for your information and convenience. When you transfer to an outside website, you are leaving the FirstGen Society domain, and FirstGen Society's information management policies no longer apply. FirstGen Society encourages you to read the privacy statement of each external website that you visit before you provide any personal data.
How we look after your information
We make sure that all the information we hold on you is as safe as possible. In addition, we have strict security procedures covering the storage and disclosure of your information in order to prevent unauthorized access and to comply with the UK Data Protection Act 1998. This means that sometimes we may ask you for proof of identity before disclosing any personal information to you.
